SEL Skills for Advisories
SEL Skills for Advisories
This hands-on intensive will teach educators how to create and sustain strong advisories where middle school and high school students are free to develop their authentic selves. Participants will learn how to establish a community of trust and rapport in their advisory and develop strategies for supporting their student’s social-emotional development. Participants will review best practices for providing academic support and learn how to help children advocate for themselves as individual learners. Importantly, participants will have multiple opportunities to reflect on their own identities as well as the identities of their students and to investigate how these identities interact in an advisory setting. Participants will discuss ways to respond to and support the diverse range of backgrounds and perspectives children bring into the classroom, particularly black, indigenous, and students of color and LGBTQ+ students. Together, we will co-design specific processes for each participant’s individual work and help them build a plan for implementing this approach.
