Boys’ Arts Express and Girls’ Arts Express are parallel single-sex after school programs designed to support boys and girls in developing social and emotional skills through the spirited, active exploration of creativity and the arts. Through fun, thoughtful activities such as woodworking, 2D and 3D visual arts, storytelling, expressive movement, singing, cooking and community service projects, children learn about themselves and each other, develop a sense of community, and build a well-stocked emotional toolbox that will help them navigate the challenges of growing up without losing touch with their authentic voices.

To grow into engaged, productive adults, children must have the opportunity and the support to discover and develop their authentic selves. Societal expectations limit a child’s view of her or himself, at the cost of emotional vitality and creative spirit. Gender stereotypes are particularly powerful because they affect us from infancy. These programs are designed to help children transcend gender limitations and build social-emotional skills.

All activities are tailored to meet the needs of the children participating in the programs. The emphasis is on process rather than product, with guided reflection as the most important part of each process and project.

The programs are staffed by trained facilitators who are teaching artists from a variety of disciplines and youth development professionals.
